What is PXM and why does it go beyond PIM?

A PIM organizes product information and can already prepare different content for channels, markets and audiences. PXM builds on these capabilities and broadens the goal: understanding whether that content truly helps people find, understand and choose the product, then improving it over time. Here is what changes.

Having correct information is essential. But it is not always enough

Imagine two product pages for the same item.

Both show the correct code, dimensions, materials and technical specifications. The first, however, presents the information in a long list that is hard to interpret. Images do not show the product in use, compatibility is hard to see and important documents are difficult to find.

The second organizes the same data clearly. It highlights what matters for that type of customer, lets you compare variants, shows compatible applications and accessories and makes the necessary documents immediately available.

The underlying data can be the same. The experience, however, is very different.

A PIM collects, organizes and governs product information. It can also prepare different descriptions, images, attributes and documents for each channel, market or audience and distribute them to the right destinations.

Product Experience Management, or PXM, takes a wider view: it does not only manage this work, but considers how much published information helps people find, understand, compare and choose a product. It therefore connects content preparation to what happens after publication.

What is PXM, in simple terms

PXM stands for Product Experience Management—the management of the product experience.

It is the approach by which a company uses data, content, images and distribution capabilities to make every product easy to find, understand and choose in the context where it is presented. It also includes observing results—needed to understand whether content is doing its job and where it can be improved.

PXM does not always mean a single piece of software and does not replace the PIM. The PIM provides operational capabilities and the information foundation; PXM orients them toward experience quality and effectiveness. The boundaries are not rigid either: many modern PIMs already include features that support a PXM approach.

The journey includes:

  • starting from reliable data;
  • enriching them with useful content;
  • preparing and distributing them in different contexts;
  • checking whether they help the audience find, understand and choose the product;
  • observing what happens after publication;
  • acting to improve progressively.

The first activities can already be handled by a PIM. What characterizes PXM is the goal behind them and the observe-and-improve cycle that continues after publication.

The goal is not to make every product page more “beautiful”, but to genuinely help whoever must make a decision: consumer, buyer, distributor, installer or technician.

From data to product experience

To understand PXM, it helps to distinguish several levels.

    Measurements, materials, codes, compatibility and certifications match the real product.

    The information is complete

    All elements needed to understand and evaluate the product are present: not only specifications, but also descriptions, images, documents and relationships with variants or accessories.

    Information is organized according to the channel, market and people who will use it. A page for an industrial buyer does not need to be built like one for the end consumer. A PIM can already manage these versions and distribute them to the right destinations.

    The product is easy to find and choose

    Titles, categories, attributes and wording support search and comparison. Decisive features are visible and understandable without forcing the customer to interpret scattered data.

    Results guide improvements

    After publication, the company observes visibility, interactions and outcomes to identify weak pages, missing information or content to improve.

PXM holds these levels together and orients them toward one outcome: making the experience more useful and effective. It thus turns information management from an activity that can end with publication into a continuous process.

What is the difference between PIM and PXM?

PIM and PXM are not two competing alternatives and do not always mean two separate pieces of software. The PIM manages the work needed to prepare and distribute information; PXM broadens the goal of that work and also considers its effectiveness after publication.

The distinction can be summarized as follows:

The PIM helps you govern what you know about the product. PXM helps you use that information to make the product easier to understand and choose.

Without correct, structured data, there is no solid foundation on which to build the experience. That is why the PIM does not disappear when a company adopts a PXM approach: it becomes an essential component.

One product, different experiences

Let us again take the example of a company that makes power tools.

On the B2B portal, a distributor might need orderable codes, logistics data, compatibility, certifications, spare-part availability and downloadable documentation.

On consumer ecommerce, use benefits, lifestyle images, ease of comparing models and clear indication of included accessories can become central.

On a marketplace, the priority is to meet taxonomies, mandatory fields and specific publishing rules so the product is classified correctly and can appear in search filters.

In a new market, language, units of measure, required certifications, terminology and buyer expectations can all change.

That does not mean inventing contradictory versions of the same product. The facts must stay consistent. What changes is how the same information base is selected, organized and presented to be useful in a given context.

A PIM can operationally manage all these versions and send them to the right channels. The PXM approach adds the questions that guide choices: which information is truly relevant for that audience? Does the presentation make search and comparison easier? What do results show after publication?

Why PXM matters especially for manufacturers

A manufacturing company knows the product better than anyone else, but that knowledge is often spread across technical office, production, marketing, sales and support.

When products have many variants, complex features and specific documentation, turning internal knowledge into clear content requires coordination. The challenge grows if the company sells both B2B and D2C, operates in several countries or must feed ecommerce, marketplaces, distributors and sales networks.

Without structured management, it can happen that:

  • distributors receive incomplete or outdated information;
  • important specifications do not appear in search filters;
  • marketing and the technical office use different descriptions;
  • a variant is shown with the wrong image or document;
  • each market rebuilds its own version of the catalog independently;
  • the company loses control over how the product is presented.

The PIM helps the manufacturer maintain a consistent foundation and prepare it for different commercial needs. PXM adds an effectiveness-oriented perspective: not stopping at technical correctness or publication, but understanding how much the information helps someone decide whether the product fits their needs.

The decisive step: observing what happens after publication

In many traditional processes, work ends when the product page goes live. If it has no obvious errors, it is considered done.

A PXM approach asks a further question: is that information doing its job well?

To answer, you need to connect content quality to what happens in channels. For example:

  • which products get few visits or rarely appear in searches;
  • which pages have missing attributes or less complete content;
  • which products are viewed but lead to few actions;
  • which pages do not make compatibility or differences between variants clear;
  • which updates improve visibility, interactions or sales.

Not every outcome depends on the product page: price, availability, demand, competition and promotion matter too. Analysis should avoid automatic conclusions and help the team understand where information quality may be one of the causes to address.

The cycle becomes:

  • organize the information;
  • check they are complete;
  • publish them in the right context;
  • observe the results;
  • identify priorities;
  • improve and measure again.

This step is what takes product management beyond publication alone.

When a company is ready to look beyond PIM

PXM becomes especially relevant when the company has started to bring order, but feels that internal efficiency alone is no longer enough.

You might recognize yourself in some of these situations:

  • information is correct, but you do not know whether it truly helps search and choice;
  • pages are complete by internal criteria, but not always effective in channels;
  • you already manage different presentations for B2B, D2C, marketplaces and foreign markets, but do not know which work best;
  • you publish regularly, but improve content only when someone reports a problem;
  • catalog data and commercial indicators are analyzed in separate tools;
  • you know some products perform worse than others, but do not know which pages to start with;
  • you want to use artificial intelligence to enrich or optimize content, but source data is still fragmented or poorly structured.

This last point matters: AI can speed up tasks such as classification, translation or content creation, but result quality depends on the quality and structure of the information it receives. Automating a confused process does not automatically make it reliable.

From PIM to PXM: evolution, not a fresh start

Looking beyond PIM does not necessarily mean replacing existing systems or starting a second major project.

The path can be gradual:

  • collect and structure essential information;
  • define responsibilities and completeness rules;
  • connect priority channels;
  • adapt content to different contexts;
  • integrate useful indicators;
  • create a continuous improvement process.

The first four phases can already fall fully within PIM work. The last two close the loop between what is published and what can be learned from results.

Each phase builds the conditions for the next. A company adopting its first PIM can therefore choose from the start a solution able to accompany it toward PXM, without having to implement everything at once.

A PXM approach should help people make better decisions, not overwhelm them with data, dashboards and extra tasks.
